Somerville is a city located in the Middlesex County of Massachusetts. It is two miles northwest of Boston. At the time of the 2010 United States Census, Somerville had a population of 75,754, and according to the American Community Survey 5-year Estimate, it had grown to 77,560. It is the most densely populated municipality in New England, and as of 2000, it was the 15th most densely populated city in the country. In 2006, the Boston Globe named Somerville the best run city in Massachusetts.
In Somerville and the surrounding area in Massachusetts, there are 2,587,770 employed workers. The largest occupational sectors in the area include:
- Office and Administrative Support Occupations (380,890 employed workers)
- Sales and Related Occupations (258,050 employed workers)
- Management Occupations (195,900 employed workers)
- Business and Financial Operations Occupations (172,080 employed workers)
This large population of workers may not think of their job as risky or dangerous, but workplace risks are present nonetheless.
Somerville Workers Face Risks
In 2014, there were 81,750 incidents of occupational illnesses and injuries nationwide that resulted in days away from work in office and administrative support occupations, according to a news release by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. In addition, in sales and related occupations, there were 55,900 incidents of workplace injuries or illness; in management occupations, there were 24,390 incidents; and, in Business and financial operations occupations, there were 8,770 incidents. This is a far higher number than workers in these fields may expect; injuries and illness at work can happen to anyone in any occupation. If you work in an office or administrative support, sales, management, or business and financial occupation, you should know your rights when it comes to compensation for missed time at work.
All Jobs Have Risks
Workers in every occupational sector and field can fall victim to an injury or illness at work. Some of the most common workplace injuries are often seen in office environments; there were 7,970 reported incidents of Carpal tunnel syndrome, and 94,670 incidents of cuts, lacerations, and punctures. Other than workplace accidents involving objects or environmental hazards, coworkers, clients, and others can pose a threat to workers. In 2014, there were 73,410 cases of violence and other injuries by persons or animal nationwide, 31,380 of which were intentional injuries by another person. As you can see, office occupations are not necessarily safe. Hence, all employers are required by law to have workers’ compensation insurance to compensate workers when they have the misfortune of suffering an injury due to one of these listed causes (or any other).
